Gladstone is a major hub for making aluminium in Australia. We operate the Yarwun Alumina Refinery, where we turn raw bauxite into alumina, and Boyne Smelters Ltd (BSL), where we make aluminium from alumina. We are also joint venture partners in Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL), one of the world’s largest alumina refineries. To repower these operations, we are investing in renewable energy, including solar, wind and battery storage, to reduce emissions and help assure the future of Gladstone's aluminium industry.
We’ve been working on a competitive repowering solution for our Gladstone assets for a number of years.
Repowering assets like ours with renewables, when they were built to run on coal and gas is challenging, but we’re making good progress.
So far, we’ve agreed to purchase 2.7GW of renewable energy, from new large-scale solar and wind farms in Queensland.
Once up and running, these projects have the potential to lower carbon emissions by about 5Mtpa and could generate the equivalent of 10% of Queensland’s current power demand.
The costs involved in transitioning to renewables are significant, and we’re working closely with the Queensland and Australian Governments to assist Boyne Smelters with the transition to a competitive and repowered future.
We have signed two long-term agreements with Edify Energy to deliver solar and battery hybrid power for our Gladstone operations, supporting reliable, affordable energy and a lower-carbon aluminium industry.
The Gladstone Power Station (GPS), built by the Queensland Government, has been providing customers with safe, reliable, low-cost electricity since 1976.
GPS is operated by NRG Gladstone Operating Services. ÌÇÐÄvlogÈë¿Úowns 42.125% of the station along with NRG Energy Inc. (37.5%), Southern Cross GPS Pty Ltd (8.25%), Ryowa II GPS II Ltd (7.125%) and YKK GPS (Qld) Pty Ltd (4.75%).
In late September 2025, GPS’s JV participants advised the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) of the potential retirement of GPS in March 2029, to meet regulatory requirements under national energy rules. This is not a final decision to retire GPS. The proposed date aligns with the expiry of current power contracts and operating agreements and can be extended if required.
GPS’s operation could be extended depending on market conditions and other factors, and all JV partners are committed to engaging with stakeholders on future site use options, which will help shape our timeline and strategy.
We’re committed to supporting a just transition that is fair, socially inclusive and that helps provide opportunities for continued access to decent work and sustainable livelihoods.
Operating in the region for almost 60 years, we have a strong history of getting behind the Gladstone community. Together Yarwun, BSL and QAL employ more than 3,000 locals and we invest in strengthening economic opportunities for our community, working with local suppliers, supporting local events, as well as playing our part in the local community with cross-sector partnership programs and sponsorships.
Use the application form and guideline below to apply for our community giving program.
In Gladstone, we acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land in the Port Curtis Coral Coast region: the Bailai, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng and Taribelang Bunda peoples.
We protect cultural heritage sites identified during archaeological surveys before the operation was built by safekeeping artefacts and protecting important scar tree sites from disturbance.
Indigenous culture is also important to us, with Gladstone employees undertaking cultural awareness as part of their training.
We understand strong relationships with our local communities are fundamental to our success. Our partnership with – an independent program, built on research from Australia's national science agency, CSIRO, provides our community with a direct and confidential way to share experiences and perspectives of our operations. It's designed to help us understand what truly matters to you, the people who live and work alongside our operations in Gladstone.
How it works

We offer a diverse range of employment opportunities within the Gladstone region. These roles span diverse fields, from skilled trades and operations to technical, professional, and entry-level careers like apprenticeships and traineeships. We actively seek people who share our values of care, courage and curiosity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment where people feel comfortable to be themselves.
Our employees make a difference in the community through our RioGivers program. This initiative empowers our people to volunteer their time, donate to causes they care about, and participate in fundraising efforts.
Our Gladstone employees can volunteer individually at any registered charity or local community group. As an added incentive, if they volunteer for 50 hours or more, their chosen charity becomes eligible to receive a A$500 donation from us.
We make it easy for Gladstone employees to donate directly from their pre-tax pay to any charity of their choice. To amplify their generosity, we match these donations dollar-for-dollar to any Australian-registered charity.
We encourage our employees organise or participate in fundraising activities for any charity across Australia. We contribute to the funds raised, with the amount based on the number of employees actively participating, further multiplying our collective impact in the Gladstone community.
ÌÇÐÄvlogÈë¿Úwill reduce production at the Yarwun Alumina Refinery in Gladstone by 40 per cent from October 2026, to extend the operation’s life until 2035 and allow time to explore further life-extension and modernisation options.
