Producing the materials the world needs relies on access to land, and we recognise that this comes with responsibility. The places where we operate are home to thriving ecosystems, many of which hold deep cultural and spiritual significance for Indigenous and land-connected Peoples.  

Mining is temporary, and requires long-term care and stewardship of the areas where we operate. We aim to manage our landholdings responsibly by planning for sustainable outcomes after mining ends. Nature loss is a global challenge that threatens ecosystems, livelihoods, and economies. We have a responsibility to manage land in a way that’s sustainable and considerate of the past, present and future values of the land.

Managing land risks

Our Environment Standard sets out the requirements for responsible land management across our managed assets. The standard includes our position and commitment to responsible land management and environmental stewardship. Learn more about our approach to environment and nature.

We have developed a framework that provides a consistent approach to identify, assess, manage and communicate land-related risk across our portfolio. It builds on our Environment Standard and includes a library of controls. This risk framework informs our assets’ approach to operational risk management. 

Our approach covers 3 categories:

  • Land disturbance (issues relating to how and where we conduct ground disturbance)  
    “Has disturbance been minimised, occurred as planned, and are impacts as predicted?” 
  • Rehabilitation pace (issues relating to how soon we rehabilitate disturbed areas that are no longer required) 
    “Is rehabilitation being implemented at an appropriate pace and scale?"
  • Rehabilitation quality (issues relating to the quality of rehabilitation and success in meeting defined criteria or objectives) 
    “Is rehabilitation design and implementation achieving target objectives and / or criteria?”  

We use the framework to understand land-related risk across our portfolio at a point in time. We also collect specific metrics from each asset annually on: 

  • land holdings
  • new disturbance
  • development progress
  • quantity and quality of rehabilitation undertaken
  • acceptance and tracking towards completion criteria.

Every operation interacts with land differently. Some sites, such as open-cut mines create a dynamic, changing footprint while a smelter retains a largely fixed footprint over time. These differences shape the way we manage land and plan for rehabilitation. Mining methods also matter. For example, bauxite and mineral sands mining allow for progressive rehabilitation—restoring areas as we develop—while open-cut and underground mines often require more complex, long-term rehabilitation strategies.   

Today, the largest share of our land footprint is in Australia, followed by the United States, Canada, Mongolia and South Africa. Our responsibility to minimise our impacts and protect landscapes goes beyond our operational footprint. Our standard applies across our managed landholdings, which we classify into 2 categories:   

  • operational areas (land where we have created disturbance through our activities), and
  • non-operational areas (land with no direct disturbance impact).

In operational areas, we track progress by measuring how much land has been rehabilitated compared to how much remains disturbed. This approach supports transparency and accountability in how we manage and restore the environments entrusted to us. 

We work with practitioners, environmental scientists, cultural heritage experts, academic institutions, Indigenous organisations and businesses, and other stakeholders in an effort to deliver outcomes that are self-sustaining and aligned with regulatory and community expectations. Methods can be tailored to the local geography and climate, as well as the desired rehabilitation outcomes. In most cases, our aim is to re-establish functional and stable ecosystems.   

Land stewardship has many interfaces. We’re careful to align and integrate our approach with how we manage communities and social performance, closure, human rights (land access and use) and mineral and non-mineral materials management, including tailings. 

Stewardship through the mining lifecycle

As temporary stewards of the land, our more modern mines plan for the end of mining from the very beginning. At our Diavik mine in Canada, mine closure was integrated into planning with communities and operational decision-making from the outset. We have had ongoing community engagement to incorporate Traditional knowledge into closure plans and activities, with progressive reclamation beginning in 2017. The Diavik mine ceased operations in 2026 and provides a useful example of how integrated environmental management actions throughout operations have created a pathway for responsible closure outcomes.  

Effective land management starts well before any on-ground activity. We undertake studies and programs to understand soils, plants, animals, ecosystems, and stakeholder values in the areas where we plan to operate. Once we understand what matters most in the landscape, we consider our impact management options and controls in alignment with the mitigation hierarchy. For example, at Winu we’re redesigning our proposed mine footprint to avoid impacts to the endangered night parrot.  

This shared vision guides how we manage land, carry out rehabilitation and engage with Indigenous Peoples, local communities and other stakeholders to define future land use objectives after mining ends.

Examples:

  • In Western Australia, we have been working with the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura (PKKP) People to build a new way of working together. In 2025, we signed a Co-Management Agreement that formalises how we engage with PKKP on proposals affecting heritage and Country, with Traditional Owner knowledge and perspectives helping shape decisions across the mine lifecycle at our Brockman 4 operations.  
  • We have also signed an Interim Modernised Agreement with the Ngarlawangga Aboriginal Corporation, building on our 2011 Participation Agreement. The agreement includes a jointly designed co-management approach, with earlier and ongoing engagement so Ngarlawangga perspectives can help shape decisions about activities affecting Country, including cultural heritage and environmental values.  
  • At Simandou in Guinea, we work closely with communities living around the project to understand their priorities, concerns and expectations throughout the life of the mine. This includes regular engagement, feedback and complaints mechanisms, and the independently-run Local Voices program, which uses surveys in local dialects to understand levels of trust and acceptance and help guide improvements to the way we work.  
  • Near our Oyu Tolgoi operation in Mongolia, we work with local communities to understand their priorities and involve them in decisions about projects supported through the Oyu Tolgoi Catalyst Fund. Residents helped shape the Khanbogd Development Master Plan, while local groups, teachers, parents and young people continue to co-design initiatives in areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure and local business development. This approach gives the community a direct role in shaping their township’s future.

We understand the connection between land and nature and we hold many important partnerships that are imperative to us managing land sustainably and productively.  

We seek opportunities to partner with and learn from the stakeholders who know the landscape to better inform our approach to land management and closure.

Examples:

  • At our Weipa, Gove and Argyle operations in Australia, we work closely with Traditional Owners and local Aboriginal people to collect native seeds for rehabilitation. Their knowledge helps us understand which plants are important to Country, when and where to collect them, and how best to bring them back as part of rehabilitation. We also regularly visit rehabilitation areas together to see how the work is progressing and discuss what comes next.  
  • At Paraburdoo in Western Australia, we’re working with Yinhawangka and other Pilbara Aboriginal businesses to rehabilitate mined land on Country. Traditional Owner knowledge helps inform how we restore the land, while the work also creates opportunities for Traditional Owner businesses to build experience and capability in rehabilitation.  
  • In Guinea, we’re working with local communities, government and conservation organisations to help protect and manage the Pic de Fon Classified Forest that is within our Simandou mining lease. 18 communities helped shape the forest management plan, bringing local knowledge and perspectives into decisions about biodiversity, natural resources and how the forest is managed. 

Innovation

Land and the nature it supports across our global operations is extremely diverse and can be complex to manage. We seek to improve how we manage land at our operations through innovations in science, technology and engineering.  

We partner with universities and research institutions so that we may continuously evolve our land management practices and support sustainable outcomes.

Examples: 

  • At Gove in the Northern Territory, Australia, we’re working with The University of Queensland and other experts to develop and test new approaches to rehabilitating bauxite residue and mined land, including alternatives to conventional topsoil.
  • Across Weipa, Gove and the Pilbara in Australia, we’re using technologies including machine learning, GPS tracking, remotely operated vehicles, radar and AI to better understand and manage biodiversity, including palm cockatoo and ghost bat populations.
  • Across Western Cape York in Queensland, Australia, we’re partnering with Indigital and Traditional Owners to combine cultural knowledge with technologies such as LiDAR and environmental DNA (eDNA), helping communities build skills to monitor and care for Country.
  • At Winu and Argyle in Western Australia, we’re working with Charles Darwin University to use interactive 3D landscape models to help Traditional Owners, communities and our teams understand and discuss changes to the landscape through mining and closure.

Transparency

We share our learnings with our operations globally and with our industry partners. For example, we were founding members of the proteus partnership, a unique collaboration between the (UNEP-WCMC) and extractive industries. In 2025 we renewed this partnership for another 5 years. The partnership is focused on improving internationally accepted information and data on protected areas and biodiversity, to support decision-making on conservation and help partners like us ensure that impacts are mitigated effectively. This information includes private sector contributions and is available through the (WDPA) and the (IBAT).
  • Definitions

    Disturbance: Land disturbed for mining, processing and related activities that is currently in use and/or not yet rehabilitated. 

    Rehabilitation: Land that has been treated for final closure. Typically, rehabilitated land has undergone surface treatment, such as being stabilised or covered with topsoil, and may be revegetated with seeds or plants. Rehabilitation activities vary depending on the type of mining that took place. Monitoring and maintenance of rehabilitated areas continues after closure to demonstrate agreed outcomes. May also be referred to as reclamation or remediation. 

    Landholdings: Land for which we have legal rights related to ownership, use or access.
